Wrightson Seeds is the leading forage seed business in Australia and has been involved with seed production, distribution and marketing since 1938.
Wrightson introduced the first proprietary cultivars into Australia in 1987, and has led the development of improved pasture plant genetics in this country.
The Australian business is supported by the strong Research and Development capacity of the New Zealand Research business and its extensive international ties. The goal of Wrightson’s forage breeding programme is to improve animal performance per hectare, rather than just pasture performance per hectare. Therefore, selection for improved dry matter production becomes an integral part of a strategy that includes selection for improved digestibility and leafiness, increased sugars and palatability, improved rumen efficiency and other factors critical to enhance farm profitability and animal productivity. Wrightson Seeds initiated this plant breeding philosophy in the 1980s and still lead all other seed companies in this area.
