Working dogs across the nation could soon be relegated to "second best friend" status for Australia’s dairy farmers.

Set to take on the mantle of best friend is a new internet resource which brings together extensive information about pastures.

Launched this week, the site enables farmers to access the latest information about pastures varieties and options for this year’s spring sowings and a series of free, downloadable guides highly sought after by agronomics and farm consultants.

Developed by Wrightson Seeds (Australia), the site also provides technical information on pasture management and some of the most advanced pastures available to Australian farmers, as well as research data pointing to the best way to optimise animal nutrition and improve animal production and profitability.

National sales and marketing manager Bill Fuller said the website had a simple, easy-to-use format with a range of download options for remote access users.

"This website is tailor-made for farmers seeking to improve their production with better pasture varieties and better pasture management," he said. "All of our pasture seed varieties can be reviewed, and farmers can click on maps or key in their postcode number to help them make appropriate variety choices for their location.

"A feature of the site is our lucerne, pasture and summer forage solutions guides. We have been producing these guides for some years now but they have generally only been available to agronomists and farm consultants.

"They are very well respected and in high demand so we have decided to make them available free to farmers via the website. We have gone to a lot of effort to set them up in small file sizes so people with slower connection speeds can access them."

The guides incorporate research results technical information about tetraploids and endophytes, pasture renovation, descriptions of individual varieties and tips for their management.

"The new website is Wrightson’s latest initiative in its commitment to providing quality pastures, information and research to Australian farmers," Mr Fuller said.
