Overview
Southern Green forage ryecorn can be ready for grazing 3 weeks before oats, especially when sown late into cold conditions. Forage ryecorn is also well suited for sowing early into warm soils. Strong yield response to blending with annual ryegrass such as Sungrazer T or Winter Star II. Ryecorn sown alone may finish after 2-3 grazings and require a resowing in spring. Consider resowing in spring with Goliath forage rape. for spring and early summer feed.
• Great option for quick winter feed particularly if sowing is late.
• After 3 to 4 grazings, forage ryecorn is likely to have thinned out and require a resowing with brassica for spring feed
• Under favorable conditions, can be sown with Nourish® italian ryegrass to extend spring growth
Sowing Requirements
Great yield results are obtained from quick winter feed pariticularly if sowing in late autumn. Earlier sowing in irrigated light soils or dryland situations is recommended as soil moisture content is a major limiting factor on end yields (JM de Ruiter and R Hanson, Crop & Food).
Aim to establish a target population of 200-250 plants/m2 for early sown crops, which equates to 110-130 kg/ha. For later sown crops, aim for 300 plants/m2 which is about 150-170 kg/ha.
Higher seeding rates than wheat and barley are required with triticale to compensate for the larger grain size. It also enables the crop to out-compete weeds effectively and improve plant density on hard setting soils.
Depth: Sow like normal cereal seed crop at a depth of 30-50 mm (situation dependant) into a weed, pest and disease free seedbed.
Fertiliser: Recommend at sowing: DAP / MAP at 80-120 kg/ha (upon soil test)
Sowing Rates:
<400mm 40-60 kg/ha
400-550mm 50-70 kg/ha
550-700mm 60-80 kg/ha
700-850mm 70-100 kg/ha
850mm or irrigation 80-120 kg/ha

Southern Green - Excellent Winter Feed
Gary van der Drift and his wife Sheryl own and operate ‘Driftin’. Their dairy farm, near Milabena, is 30 km out of Wynyard in the northwest of Tasmania. Currently, they milk 440 cows. As part of a pasture renovation program, Gary planted a mix that included Southern Green Ryecorn two years ago.
Chasing winter feed production, the mix included Southern Green Ryecorn and Winter Star II annual ryegrass in the first year.
